A warm wind combs our hair as we stand on the pretty promontory overlooking the city. A ship sailing down below describes a silver line in the water, and the sun is sinking to the west, though its glare is still blinding. Before us, illuminated with its low rays, Stockholm’s lake and canals, the slender spires of the churches pointing up over the rest of the city skyline, the colourful townhouses, and the narrow streets of the old town, now cast into shadow. Long shadows fall on the water too, ships edge into port, and warm lamps wink on in cosy windows. Stockholm welcomes us with the magical charm of the Northern Lights.
